I am trying to find out any information about my brother's time in the Merchant Navy. I knew he spent a lot of time on Oil Tankers that sailed out of North Shields.

Believe I sailed with an AB with the surname of Hick or Hicks in the early 80"s working out of Aberdeen. Seem to recollect he was a Scotsman though. He would of been a man then in his fourties or early 50"s. The Company was Seaforth Maritime of Aberdeen, their shipping side went years ago but believe their land haulage and freightage may still be alive and kicking. JS

#2... That was in the good old days cappy. Wasn't BP then was BTC British Tanker Company. Was always at least 3 lying outside on the River Berths waiting to get into the drydock. Whatever happened to those days of prosperity. I had two uncles who worked there one as a riveter and the other a general foreman. Now the whole area is populated by yuppie flats and apartments. Thousands were employed on the Tyne yards. A whole generation disappeared almost overnight. The country was still paying of the lend lease to the US and was for many more years, and yet gave all this income away. Other countries that lost the war went ahead in leaps and bounds and the UK went backwards. Whatever author titled England a nation of shopkeepers wasn't far off the mark. Cheers JS
