Hi.Roger, I have only just joined the merchant navy site and I was looking around and noticed your name which jumped out to me,I was at the gravesend training school in 1966 and joined my first ship the Caronia as a deck boy on December 28th 1966 for a world cruise and i am sure you was one of the deck boys that joined at the same time.Roger Bartlett.

Hi. Roger. I think you were at Gravesend training school at the same time as me as I also joined the Caronia as my first ship on a 5 month 22 days world cruise, it sailed on the 28th of December 1965 ,I think there were 8 new deck boys joined and I remember a young girl committed suicide by jumping overboard on the way to New York ,I also jumped ship in Aussie and traveled around for four years before coming back to England .

    Hi Roger.
Welcome to the site, looks like you struck lucky first time with old shipmates, which is what this site is all about, plus memories and tall tales. I just did a post about a peanut who lives near me here in Cooma NSW.
Welcome to Rod as well, probably been looking in and then saw your post. And now Terry has found your post
    looks like old friends week.
    Cheers Des

It was one day from Panama ,her steward boyfriend had committed suicide a year before and she wanted to be with him ,hence a year to the day she jumped,I was actually controlling the davits of the lifeboat that bought her aboard ,what annoyed me was the bloody yanks trying to get pictures of the poor girl, and one of the A.Bs on the lifeboat told me that there was a sea snake ,a turtle, and hundreds of tiny crabs on her body ,she was still wearing her nightdress and I realized that I had seen her standing on the after bits (poop deck) I was getting rid of the rubbish from the petty officers mess room and I guess she was just getting some wind in her hair ,sad day but at least the Bosun and the lamp-trimmer got a good drink out of sewing up the canvas shroud ,they were absolutely plastered, anyway nice to chat mate look after yourself.Roger.
