    Notes:
My wife is researching a Great grandfather who we know went to sea as an apprentice in 1849. Can anyone give me any information on any marine school training in those days and also shore studying in those days. He ended his days as the ferrymaan on the Arthur River in NW Tassie which he originally rowed and then fitted an endless whip to winch back & forth, and we can tell from his communications with the departement and minister are very well written. Unfortuneatly we cannot trace his movements from 1848 to 1880, so sounds like a good saailor.

Try Hull Trinity House Navigation School, which was started in 1364, but gained its present title around 1750 since when they have kept records of all pupils who attended. Good luck in your quest

Thanks Doc, yes checked those out, liked the story of the RC training ship at B'head that they burnt down twice. Can quite understand. When at Teddies, our class Teacher, Jack FyField was very upset at our efforts for one exam and stated that they should be destroyed. We had a fireplace in the old Whitechapel school we were using so I put a match to them. Very close to being expelled.
