    Default Rangatira

Hi Gary, I actually served on the Rangatira for 9 months while she was used as an accomodation ship in Loch Kishorn (Scotland) in 1977,this was after I had served a few years at sea with Denholms and Gardiners as Catering boy, asst steward, asst cook, cook/steward and finally chief cook. The Rangatira, I believe used to run from North/South Island in New Zealand, she was then used as an accommodation ship on an oil rig construction site before being laid up for a couple of years then was sent with the British task force to the Falklands War, she was then sold to an Indian company and used as a cruise ship until scrapped I believe.

    Default The RANGATIRA....

Guys,I think you may be talking about two different New Zealand vessels of the same name.

RANGATIRA (1) was a passenger ship built 1931. After 36 years she was broken up in Hong Kong in 1967.John D.Perkins would probably have sailed on this one as Gary thinks it would have been early 60's.
RANGATIRA (2( was the pass/ro-ro ship built in 1972. Sold in 1986. .Subsequently jumboised to cruise ship .Scrapped Aliaga Turkey in 2005.
Alan M. obviously sailed in this one.
