There is only one British Merchant Navy uniform thought I had put this on here before . The distinguishing feature of the braid is the diamond this signifies that the wearer is certificated. Most Mates and engineers ignored the rules if they had to , and had to supply their own braid and were uncertificated I never heard of anyone being prosecuted for this . Any other such as company uniform was livery or classed legally I suppose . If was in the navy would probably be court martialled for impersonating someone you weren’t . JS
