Union-Castle Cap Tallys
I recently acquired two Union-Castle Line cap tallys: Dunluce Castle and Llandovery Castle. I know there was only one Dunluce Castle, built in 1904, but there were two Llandovery Castles – the first was sunk by a German submarine in 1918 and the second was launched in 1925. Is it possible to determine from the attached scans approximately when the two tallys were made? I’m trying to ascertain if they date from WW1, or were made later.

Maybe one way is to compare the style of writing with similar from other ships of the times.

A lot of companies changed the style of their house flags over the course of their existence, it may be worth pursuing this avenue also as it also show on the tallies

Re: Union-Castle Cap Tallys
This is an excellent suggestion. If anyone has a Union-Castle cap tally that they know is from WW1 I'd love to see it...

Note to self... Don’t write blog entries just before going to bed. Typos, i.e. tallys, which should be tallies, cannot be changed by the time you get up!

If we worried about spelling mistakes on this site Gary, very little would be written

With all due respect is your moniker an anagram?? Also is your post of a similar disposition or do you have a poor understanding and use of the English language ???
