Hello,my names Derek Scutt,Dow Jones was Master on the British Curlew when I joined her in Walsash for 6 months.in 1968.I was then one year into my apprenticeship.He was a very likable Master,and good fun ashore,he once told me his wife keep French poodles as pets but he didn't much like them!.I was the only apprentice on the Curlew at the time and he and I often went "up the road together",much to the annoyance of the chief officer JC Allen.I would do the load ports and go ashore with the skipper in the discharge ports,which by their nature were always more exciting.We were carrying lubricating oils at the time and went to many fascinating ports in some really out of the way places.

This was always my point exactly when I posted how hard its getting to obtain ships pictures on the net over the past couple of years, I built my ships picture library when I first joined this forum some 10 + years ago and I had to purchase a few from around the world, They are getting harder to obtain of the net and a lot of pics have a copyright that's why I suggested asking the members on the open forum if your looking for a ship you sailed in ask the members most of us have built up a picture library. The British Splendour was the first ship I joined in the British Merchant Navy. I joined her as a 5th engineer in the early months of 1956 at the age of 21 years. I joined her in dry dock at Swan Hunters and Wigham Richardson. I was even allowed to have my wife on board during the ship's stay in dry dock.
Quite a good start for a first timer, was it not?.

Hi Steve,
I sailed on the MV British Centaur, British Avon, British Promise, British Spey, British Esk (3 times) British Scientist (twice), British Security and the Forties Kiwi for 2 years. I then transferred to BP Oil coastal trading for 18 months before giving up the sea forever, except as a passenger. Visited some great places including Ango Ango in the Congo where the ship turned midstream in a whirlpool, Angola, dry docked in Yura in Japan where we beat the drydock team at football 5-0. as well as coastal trading in South America. In Santos we docked for repairs and some of the crew actually met Pele playing football on the beach with the local kids.

Sorry Des, have not been back here for ages, but as far as my memory goes, I just contacted BP Tanker co , and they sent me actual pics that I was looking for.
Sorry not much more than I can remember now.
