BP Tankers
Joined my first ship, British Major, on the Tyne in November '58. Laid her up in the River Fal after Xmas '58. Then joined the British Resource earlt '59. Out to the Gulf then Kwinana WA, then coasting around Australia.
Back uo to the Gulf then Australia again. finally home to Uk after 12 months. Then my last BP Tanker, British Swift in 1960.
Went ashore for a few months after that then sailed again with Ellerman Papayani then Nigerian National Line before emigrating to Australia in late '64.

British Power
Albi,
I was the Senior Deck Apprentice on British Power joined her 26.7.53 in the Tyne and after two long trips around the world without coming back to the U.K. finally signed off on 4.5.54. By that time my Indentures had expired! After we left the Tyne, we had an engine breakdown and limped into Grangemouth where we went up to the cargo jetties for engine repairs. We had a white crew in foc'sle accommodation which wasn't very popular with the white crew especially as another BP Tanker with an Indian Crew living aft, joined us on the other side of the jetty. A complaint was made to the Union Rep but to no avail! We still sailed with the crew living forward. The poor old deck boy had a struggle in heavy weather carrying the meals from the galley aft along both flying bridges and sometimes dropped the lot.
Before that I served on the following as an Apprentice:-
British Cavalier 22.6.50 to 5.4.51
British Baron 24.5.51 to 12.6.52
British Fame 15.8.52 to 30.5.53
then British Promise as 3rd Mate 10.9.54 to 19.8.55
British Captain as 3rd Mate 4.11.55 to 12.5.56
British Triumph as 3rd Mate 23.2.57 to 23.6.57
British Oak as 2nd Mate 29.6.57 to 5.3.58
finally British Defender 10.6.58 to 31.3.59 as 2nd Mate

Hi Clive, I was on the Trust as cabin boy from July 62 until I left her in the Isle of Grain on May 63 and I think she was about the best job I had. Great crew and loads of fun on the Kiwi and Oz coast.
Hope you are well,
Regards , Jim
