Great piece of film Vernon. To stand and watch a ship being launched is something special and i find it sad that future generations in U.K. will likely never experience it. The yards, along with the B.M.N. are all but gone, what ever happened to the greatest ship building nation on earth? A nation that once owned 50% of the worlds shipping and carried 60%of the worlds trade at one time?

Happy daze John in Oz.

British Trust
These films were under the name of "Seaward the Great Ships" and was a famous film on Clydeside.
I was a Clydeside apprentice when this film was made.
All gone now only the buildings of warships left and we do not see that lasting after the present aircraft carrier orders.
Difficult for me to watch this, everyone I knew that was involved in it has now passed on. The shipbuilding tradesman is a lost generation.

Quite correct Jimmy , I have a new copy of "Seaward the great ships " and the launch of the
British Trust is well shown. It is indeed a facinating film.
Of special interest on the copy I have is an extra film of life around the Glasgow dockland.

For those of you who are interesred in historical news events check out the Pathe News Archive. I served on the Andes and it was interesting to see the news clip of her being launched in Belfast in 1939

Agree with you there John, and thanks Vernon for putting in the link
Those that have never worked in a shipyard or sailed on the briny will never know the emotion that such a film stirs in us, the world is a sadder place with the demise of such scenes. Very few places "launch" ships these days, as most are too big, instead they are "floated out" of drydock, not quite the same, but still a sight to behold.
