Re: Great Bitter Lakes Association
Peter Gasson, who was on Melampus, has written an excellent article in this month's Nautilus Telegraph about how the marooned seafarers rescued Egyptian soldiers escaping after their defeat in the Six-Day War.
You can view it here - on page 30

There's also a review of my book, 'Stranded in the Six-Day War', on p32.

Book 'Stranded in the Six-Day War'
Dear all
I have recently reprinted ‘Stranded in the Six-Day War’, including a few revisions pointed out to me by readers.
The book is about the experiences of the seafarers on board the 14 merchant ships trapped in the Suez Canal between 1967 and 1975, including the Blue Star Line ship, Scottish Star.
It has been well received and has had some excellent reviews, including this one on Amazon by Jeremy Bowen, BBC Middle East Editor and author of Six Days: How the 1967 War Shaped the Middle East:
This is a brilliantly researched and written account of an almost forgotten incident in the 1967 Middle East war. It’s full of tasty nuggets of detail. The war stranded ships that were passing through the Suez Canal, and created a unique community of marooned seafarers. Recommended. Jeremy Bowen, August 2017
Best wishes

David Kemp was master of the Port Invercargill from March 1968, when the ship was stranded in the Suez Canal. He's recently sent me an album of excellent photos, and I've started a short blog series to display the photos.

Calling all who were in the Great Bitter Lake! This blog post is about the captains – it includes an extract from my book Stranded in the Six-Day War and photos generously shared by David Kemp. David Kemp has supplied many of the names of people in the photos but a few are missing. If you know any of the missing names, please get in touch and I’ll add them. Thank you!

Re: Great Bitter Lakes Association
I continue my series of posts with extracts from 'Stranded in the Six-Day War' alongside new, unpublished photos – some here kindly provided by Siegfried Hellwig following the 2017 Nordwind reunion.
This extract covers the triumphant return of the two German ships, Nordwind and Münsterland, which powered themselves all the way back to Hamburg after eight years stranded in the Suez Canal.

Stranded in the Six-Day War - the story spreads
In this post:
1. Books and film about the stranded ships
2. Ebook https://amzn.to/2NULZkE
1. The story of the ships marooned in the Suez Canal during the Six-Day War is gaining its place in the history books.
Swedish publisher Breakwater Publishing is producing a book with a section about the ‘Yellow Fleet’. Karl Franzmann is researching the stamps created by the Polish seafarers.
Meanwhile, in Slovakia, Peter Valdner is compiling a comprehensive catalogue of the wonderful variety of stamps produced by the seafarers throughout the eight years of the ships’ sojourn in the Great Bitter Lake. If you have some unpublished images of GBLA stamps, please get in touch with him:

New film
Plans are also afoot for a documentary for Al Jazeera about the Suez ships. Egyptian production company iCatch Productions are currently waiting for visas so a team can come to the UK to interview former seafarers who served in the Great Bitter Lake.

2. I have finally produced an eBook of ‘Stranded in the Six-Day War’. I wanted to make my title available at low cost so that more people can find out about this slice of little-known history – and for those who simply don't buy physical books any more.

If you would like the paperback version, I have plenty of copies left! If you’d like one at the ‘mate’s rate’ of £10 including P&P (within the UK), just get in touch.
