Hi Bev
We must have missed each other. I did the Rotterdam far East run on the Menestheus in 1972/3 calling in at Durban.
I remember rolling down to Cape Town in the most frightful of weather. Can't remember who was on board at the time - I'll have to look at some photos in the loft. Chief Engineer I think was Robin Kelly, Irish guy. Wasn't the bar called The Hole in the Wall?

Hi Mike
I joined EDs as 3rd mate after getting my 2nd mates(of a steamship in those days) I then stayed with Ocean until 1986 when they nearly ran out of shipos and made me redundant. We had to have a pay freeze if I remember correctly as EDs paid better than blue flue.working for them was ok but promotion was rather slow. Some of the blue flue Masters were a pain and seem to think their tickets were better than those of ED officers.I liked the West Africa run as it was usually short trips and often docked in Avonmouth which suited me.On the whole the company treated me very well

Sorry I don't remember it's been almost forty years. I really have to get out the photos. One of our captains was taken off the ship for misconduct.Replaced by the mate whose name was Peter and he had apparently been in jail in China for spying. (he was only writing down the names of ships in harbour!) We seemed to have had a lot of deck department changes. Many of the officers I only knew their first names or nicknames.
A lot of my photos got destroyed and I never thought to write down names at the time. I was not a writer then.

Lin,
Would that be Peter Crouch that you are referring to.

Re Odyssey Works 1964
Hi Andrew,
I was probably in the previous intake to you at 'Odyssey Works' Birkenhead. I did two voyages on the Perseus from March 1966-September 1966.
The Bosun was Willy Thomas (great bloke) Some of the other deck crew were Gwynne Pritchard, Barry Cavagner, Peter Wharton, John Forrestor and myself Tony Stuart (R794875) I have a few photographs of those two voyages, you may recognise some of the blokes whose names I no longer recall. Let me know if you would like some copies and I'll see what I can do. (I'm new to this site!)

Re Bath Cottage et al
Hi whoever you are?
I'm sure your refering to South Road Waterloo? Well, just up the road is Tony Almond's Gardening and Hardware store. Tony was my brother in law before his untimely death at age 54 yrs. Tony Almond (nicknamed Cocky) was also at sea from approx' 1956-1964. He started off with Blue Funnel having attended Aberdovey outward bound sea training school. I know he served on the vessels; Patroclus, Theseus, Helenus of Blue Funnel before heading over to 'Mann Island'. Some of the ships' names I remember him sailing on whilst there are; Santander, Reina Del Mar, Rubens, Athel Foam, Carinthia, Pavia, Florian and Redstart, before finally going ashore. By the way Tony was instrumental in creating my own desire to go to sea.
Hope this is of interest to you, Tony's family still run the business in South Road to this day, call in and say G'Day.
Regards Tony Stuart (NSW Aus')

Hi Andrew.
My daughter helped me to upload photos today. You can find them in the Blue Funnel album on my profile page HERE. Would love to hear from anyone else who recognises themselves or others.
