S.S.Wooler Foundered off Ushant 1899
Hi All,
The ship in the subject I am trying to find information about. Bulder Edward Withy & Co. west Hartlepool, (Sunderland). Owner Steel,Young & Co. London. Built 1891. IMO No. 98969. M Great Uncle William Robert Wilde was a Carpenter and/or Shipwright. He sailed on her but doesn't appear on the original articles. So he must have joined her somewhere else. She foundered off the Ushant Coast 2nd,January 1899.The wre only 3 survivors but he was not one of them.!9 other Crew Perished. He was found on the beach by locals and nursed back to reasonable health. but had severe traumatic head injuries. He does not appear on the England 1901 census. So haven't managed to find when he returned to his wife and Family in Birkenhead Cheshire. He died due to these injuries in 1906. He was born in 1958.I imagine he would have been DBS (Distressed British Seaman) Had no luck there either.Would be very much appreciated if anyone could help or point me in another direction. Thanks for bearing with me.Best Regards Ken Berry
