Standard Oil
I was always led to believe that Standard Oil traded under different acronyms as follows;
ESSO = Eastern States Standard Oil
SOCONY = Standard Oil Co.of New York
How true is this?

ESSO is the initial for SO, Standard Oil. Exxon-Mobil is now the parent company for many companies.which include many names that have disappeared over the years. Cal Tex, Socony- Vacuum was formed in 1934, Lago Shipping, Cleveland Petroleum. AtlanticGulf West Indies oil co, AGWI, Esso Petroleum.
Humble Oil, Creole Petroleum, British Mexican. Imperial Oil, and many others have affiliated together,
Standard Oil was broken up and each State had a Standard Oil of New Jersey, of Ohio , or Indiana and so on.
The list of companies under the Exxon-Mobil umbrella is almost endless.

standard oil
There is a group of seven companies called the Seven Sisters of petroleum.
Standard oil of New Jersey
Standard oil of New York
Standard oil of California
plus Gulf, Texaco, Shell and BP.
The first three were the breakup by the GovUSA of Standard Oil. It is a fascinating story and is in a number of books and reports as though through them Mr JD Rockefeller controlled the US Government and such half the world.
