Took a bit of another look today, no new news - but interesting and interested.

Could do with anyone that uses Ancestry sites to assist, Will send all by e.mail to Ray, with hope.

I have ordered a death certificate that may or may not belong to the right James, I won't know until it comes but if it yields anything I will let you know!

Thanks for coming back and updating, sometimes the answers do seem to come quickly, others seem to take an age, recently found new info after five years. It would be good if you do not give up and continue to look in, if you can update on own progress, this would help us to help you.

As you are aware I have thus far given all one hundred percent and will not give in, hopefully someone on site may come up with the missing link.

Well, I ordered two certificates. The first one a death certificate from the right time and area of london turned out to be a dead end.
There is no death certificate for a Braithwaite Brown passing in the 1970's.
The other certificate though is promising. I ordered it from New Zealand where a William Brown and a Sarah Ann Braithwaite who are married have their son James Braithwaite Brown in Dec 1882.
Is it possible if he was born in NZ that he could still be part of the merchant navy and have british citizenship and therefore be able to jump ship and shack up with his misses in 1906 in Poplar?

Just returned from an eventful long weekend, will reply more fully tommorow, off the top of my head it seems logical. Time will tell, will reply more fully tommorow, would be interested to see others replies also, I would imagine that many within the commonwealth and elswhere would have sailed on British ships etc. The family may also have emigrated or simply returned to the UK. This seems likely then as William the father is noted as being at the wedding, long way to go for a wedding London from NZ in those times unless also pretty wealthy etc.

As said will look in tommorow and see if any of us have or can offer more.

No William was not at the wedding. The two witness's are both from Clara's side ie Samuels.

William Brown was born in Sunderland and Sarah Ann Braithwaite born in Leicester. If this is how the name came about then not as glamourous as a nautical rescue but if it is the correct solution then I don't mind.
The couple concerned were married in new zealand in February 1874. William is listed as a labourer at that time. I have looked on Ancestry dot com for James coming into the country but can't find it so really my only other avenue is if there is some record of him joining a ship in NZ then getting off in Poplar to settle down with Clara.
If so where do I look?

Ps The couple were married and then James was born in Timaru. Its a port in New Zealand that it would appear was very active with the British Merchant Navy

Well not much more detail from Grandad over the weekend except that we found out about an Aunts grocers shop in Poplar and the fact that Grandad James Braithwaite Brown was a heavy drinker in his later years and chucked out of almost every pub in millwall (poplar).

There is this registery of a JB Brown,but it is a lot earlier than the date posted!?
