Arctic Convoys

Aah, my first post - please forgive any bloopers!

My father (Ernest Ronald [Ron] Snashall 1924 - 2004), uncle Arthur Cyril [Mick] Snashall (1921 - 2003) and granfather (Sidney Charles Snashall 1891 - 1961) were all merchant navy and served in WWII. Dad was torpedoed on the San Fabian.

I'm doing the family tree and really want to get more information on their war service. All were "Special Operations for the Liberation of Europe" sailors. Dad was at the Normandy beaches on D-day plus 4. After reading the recent posts on "Special Ops" service I've asked for a copy of his records.

What I'd like help with is information on how to access records on the Arctic Convoys. Both Mick and Grandad were on those horrors.

Any help would be appreciated.

They all seem to favour Eagle Oil tankers Empire Grenadiier was managed by Eagle Oil

Stan & Arthur were both on the "Lucellum" signed on in Tillbury 18th September 1944

The record infers that he was a passenger where in fact he was signed on the "Trophon" as crew, He sign in Tilbury on the 23rd June 1923 as a Greaser the ship had sailed from Tampico on the 12th august 1923 arriving New York on the 21st August 1923

Dad said they were "Eagle Oil" men, following on from Grandad, until Dad (Ron Snashall) was torpedoed on the San Fabian and, once rescued and deposited in New York, he was left to "rot" for 3 months before he was repatriated to the UK. They kept him on a short leash, as he needed to attend the Company offices daily for his subsistence money and his Company paid for room was half a city away! Not enough money for public or other transport either!

He wouldn't sail with Eagle Oil again, if he could avoid it. I don't have his full service history yet, but none of the later ships I know about are Eagle Oil.

I understand that the "Empire" ships were enemy ships seized and put into allied service under a different name, all beginning with Empire. It's interesting that information like that will be lost in time, unless people continue to research and record stuff.
