Wondered if you had come across the prefix LBS, apparently some names of MN Men on the Pontypool monument have this prefix before the full name. Will look into it further and knowing the actual names would help. This would sway away from Lascar if the names were Williams, Jones etc. Would it lean towards a Leading Bodied Seaman? A youngster or lesser Seaman?

Anyone come across or know what a LBS may be or have been?

Leading Boy Seaman or Leading Bodied Seaman are not ranks of either the RN or MN.

Was clutching at straws from third hand information, thanks all that have replied thus far, will see if I can get more info. Have looked at several names at CWGC and no joy so far with this prefix. Probably will find it to be LDS and to do with Church of the Latter Day Saints or similar.

Have come up with three or four names of MN recorded at Pontypool but no mention of LBS, will attempt for more info including a pic possibly. At present uncertain to his full name or which war etc. Just something mentioned in passing I thought interesting.

Apparently LBS was just one entry on the monument and will as said attempt to find out more.

    Thanks all K.

    Hi Keith
I think you will find that the prefix LBS shown on the Monument could stand for Lost British Seaman those that possibly were never found!?

This is the only sensible answer that i can come up with!
    Hope it may be correct!

Is LBS not the acronym for Leading British Seaman. It would seem to be.

There is no such rate as LBS in the Royal or Merchant Navies.
