Bathman
Hello, I have been searching for my Grandfather, I have a document a certificate of distarge from Mercant Navy reserve pool. He is classed as a bathman but the H in the wording is blured. I can't see any Navy roles as a bathman only other service roles as a batsman. Did the merchant Navy have batsman? His name was Edward Cairns born 1919 he then went on to join the army.

Re: Bathman
Your attachment does state BATHMAN.
This would be on a passenger ship, where crew members were employed as Bathmen to assist
passengers when having a bath.

Re: Bathman
Thankyou for this reply, knowing nothing regarding the merchant Navy this is surprising. So there would have been civilian passengers crossing the seas during WW2 ?
Is there any way to find out what ships Edward would have served on and where ?

Re: Bathman
Leigh in the top right of your attachment there is his Dis A number (this is his merchant navy discharge book number which is specific to him) if you put that in a post to the forum some one on the forum may be able to help tracking down his ships.
Alternatively if you can find his discharge book, it looks a bit like an old passport that would have a list of the ships he sailed on.

Re: Bathman
Hello Leigh
From the following link you can apply for his Seamans Pouch, which will have limited info, you cannot get a Seamans Book Replacement.
There is the his CRS10 Documents that will hold all his Sea Service in the MN.
This too can be applied for from the National Archives.
Hope this helps

Re: Bathman
Very common on liners then to have a BR and a BS.
No not Bull **** Bathroom steward and bedroom steward.
No longer the need for a BS as all have an En suite. BR are now referred to as State room stewards.

Happy daze John in Oz.
