In 1958 when I signed on as an indentured cadet with PSNC my pay was 12£ per month rising on each annual anniversary by £2 or £3
for the 4 year duration.
However in 1961/62 as uncertificated 3 rd Mate on a PSNC supertanker my wages went to £160 per month.

Chris, £160 a month in 1961/62 as uncertifcated 3rd mate? as J/Eng in 1970 I was on £80 a month. In 1972 as 4th eng with Part (A) for my seconds certificate I was on £162.50 a month.

#16 in 1961/62 that would be a masters wage and lucky to get it . JS
In 1964 there was a rise in NMB rates , I was mate and the salary for mate went up to101-12/6 a month previous it had been under a hundred a month and well below what you were getting as uncertificated 3 mate in earlier years . Are you sure of your figures ? In 61/62 I was 2 mate with a mates cert. on 72 pounds a month on company contract . Cheers JS

This may be of interest on pay scales. A pay slip from 1911. I think he may have been an A.B. and saving for something as never drew a sub. The reverse side is also interesting for the time.

About 1963/4, SOS £31.5s.0 per month, but probably doubled it with overtime.

Yes Vernon, beer on UCL at 9 pence a pint if I recall.
But the barman always had a jug along side alongside the pump, said it was for the froth before pouring and he would always add some to each pint.
We were convinced it was only water as it was a metal jug so we could not see in.

As to lunch at 7 bells, that was the time we had to as officers stewards get the menu to the galley.
As said very few ever went down to eat, result we got some great lunches.

I left Gravesend NSTS a couple of days before I joined the SS Margaret Bowater in Rouen, France, as crews mess boy on 21st May 1965.

My wage was £23.0.0 per month

Signed on the Andes 10th January 1969 as an Asst/Ck @ £59.12.6 per mth. Did 3mths 11days on my 1st trip with 653 hrs overtime @ 5 shillings and 9 pence an hr thats around 6.25hrs per day. Asst/Ck QE2 20th April 1970 @£56 per month 2mths 12days 501.5 hrs overtime at 6/10 an hr, like you all happy days.
