Help with finding discharge info/pouch
Seasons greetings
My father passed away last month and I am struggling to find his discharge number on the National Archives website, although I think I found one of my uncles. Five of them served and both grandads were at sea.
I have tried a general search and more specific searches in BT372 using various combinations of his surname, DoB and place of birth but he is not coming up.
I recall he gave me his discharge number in the 2000s but I have lost it now unfortunately. His details are Baxter 30/08/1943 and he was in the Merchant Navy from maybe the mid-60s until maybe 1977 I think.
Grateful for any help and advice with this

Re: Help with finding discharge info/pouch
Hello Eve
As i read that the Person you seek info on was still at Sea after 1972 , there will be no records as such, as there were not kept after 1972.
There may be something up to 1972 but i have found these sort of things are very difficult to come across.
I wil however look and see if anything comes up, and will post if i do find any records.
Thanks for the question ans Posting.
Cheers
PS Can you post his full name and place of Birth please this could assist us!

Re: Help with finding discharge info/pouch
Knew a John Baxter in the 1960s but much older than the date given. He went to live in Berwick on Tweed. He was a returning seafarer to the shipping world and had taken up accountancy whilst ashore. He had lived in Belfast for awhile and we put him up whilst he sorted himself out. However think he belonged to a family of well known Brewery’s in Yorkshire., JS

Re: Help with finding discharge info/pouch
Hello Eve
So far i have not found anything, but you may swant to open the Link i give here and follow it up.
If anything they may be able to assist in finding something??
Good Luck
This is a guide to locating records of merchant seamen in service since the end of the First World War, including records from the Second World War, and up to the last decades of the 20th century. These are records of seamen serving on British registered vessels but the seamen themselves need not have been British to appear in the records.
For service records of seamen serving after 1972 go to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

My dad did have a significantly older brother called John but we’re not linked to the brewery family. Appreciate the information tho.
