"Moyles"

Do any fellow septuagenarians remember the little tug-like vessel often moored on the landward side of the Prince;s landing stage at Liverpool, south end which I understood as a young lad was the Liverpool Port Health Authority vessel meeting incoming ships in the Mersey to prevent the spread of any new illnesses brought from tropical ports. I can find not a single mention anywhere on the web. I thought it was built by Yarwoods of Northwich, but again no progress there. I do have a postcard of her, so she did exist with that name. Any help much appreiated.

Hi Ray, I remember the boat you are talking about if not the name of it, when I was on the IOM ferries it seemed to be there all the time, I was told it was the "body boat" and was used to take corpse's out of the Mersey, so it must of had something to do with the port health, anyway that's what I was told.

Could this possibly be the one? Just guessing!

I thank Phil,Ron & Doc for your responses on the above, I can say Doc that you are on the wrong track for certain, but it was a good try and appreciated. Ron, the funnel colour was cream with a 'cunard' broad red band about 3/5ths up, and I a thin red band on the top rim of the funnel. She was like a very diminutive tug in appearance, and I feel that you Phil are probably on the right track. Thanks again lads for that.

I don't know how helpful this is but I have a photo of "Moyles" (B & W) taken by my father. I came across your thread while trying to identify the boat.
The picture was probably taken just after WWII. This is because my father was a doctor and at the end of the war he went to Liverpool to work in the school for Tropical Medicines, although I don't think he stayed there long (I was born in 1946 in Glasgow). The back of the photo has 18 121 printed on it and I think that this can date the photo (but not sure). I'll try and upload the picture. There are 4 crew in the picture, all in uniform. If I can't upload, I can send you a copy of the photo. Your thread helped me identify the old photo.Moyles 18-121.jpg

Hi, i'm glad this site was able to help you identify the Moyles, while your Dad was at the School of Tropical Medicine perhaps he was sent on the Moyles to board and inspect ships and crews coming into Liverpool, your post adds to Ray's original post that he thought Moyles had something to do with Port Health.
