Life and friendliness in Havana ? wow I can still remember it after 60 odd years ,unbelievable, as I staggered back to the ship at 4.15 am (we were sailing at 10.am) the black gang on the 12 to 4 who had maintained their watch came thundering down the gang plank like a herd of wild animals and off to the grog and the girls. A couple of days later the ship ran out of pennicilin so a few of these guys suffered for a until we berthed back in the US.

Oh Boy that was one good place The Sunshine! was if i recall in Kilindini Road Mombassa!

Many a good time there! Loved those East African Ports !

I remember Mombasa in the 70's. ,Vernon- ,out of the port,along Kilindini Road, the seamens'mission on the left for a quick beer then,through the giant tusked arches into town near to Fort Jesus, the Sunshine Club on the right?.... .Afternoons off to Mombasa Beach Hotel in our hired VW Beetles with as many shipmates as you could carry..... some of the best days of my sea career. Now 50+ years ago,I can still feel the heat,tempered slightly by that cooling sea breeze and recall all the sights and sounds of that lovely East African port,especially the Arab dhows in the old port loading up for their homeward trips... LM (Lourenco Marques-now called Maputo,in Mocambique was another memorable place for we seafarers...... and Tanga,and Beira and Dar-es-Salaam and.......... Lovely.

Oh such great Memories Graham and all those Ports ! We did have some fun, and Boy did we have it all then! What a shame it all had to end!
We were so full of life , could take on the World without a worry! Now look at some of us like me all decrepid and Wrinkled! LOL

Oh! if only some wise old owl had told we men about the virtues of moisturiser back then Vernon,and that our super-tanned sailor's weatherbeaten handsome visages and necks would end up as a yard long shroud of dark mottled leathery -back turtle skin.. Back then I could have joined my ships with a large jar of nicked from my Sis Pond's Cold Creme ,discreetly concealed in my wash bag. No need cheeky chops, I just keep my mask on

....Masks hide a multitude of ugly features.I may never take mine off.
I remember when a mask was only used if you were doing a robbery.Now,most people wouldn't notice you holding up that bank.
And of course,a mask could be a prelude of things to come in an amorous preamble.Now,they're a real turn off-and so common!

Always thought they were things that stuck up on ships Graham , that is apart from the human ones,.there was the fore mask, the main mask , the mizzen mask and the after mizzen mask. This spell checker not working again has spelt missing wrong . JS

There was a time when if you entered a bank wearing a mask they would call the police, now they call them if you do not wear one.

Saw a guy the other day without his on, did not recognise him.
What a convoluted society we have become.
