Finding information on a sailor in apprentice from 1837-1852
I am looking for information regarding an apprentice Patrick Conley who in 1837 at age 16 entered a 5 year apprenticeship under a master William Brown. Is there information available that could indicate what ships he might have served on and any other related information , would be appreciated. Thanks.

Apprenticeship records
From 1823 masters of ships greater than 80 tons were required to carry a quota of indentured apprentices. The indentures had to be filed with the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen. The records now held at the National Archives are Apprenticeship Indexes to Indentures, 1824- 1953 (BT 150), but the actual Apprenticeship Indentures, 1845-1962 (BT 151) have only been kept in batches of every 5th year, as have the Apprenticeship Indentures Fishing Boats, 1895-1935 (BT 152). Some Apprenticeship Indentures may have survived in private hands, for example, in shipping company archives.

Re: Finding information on a sailor in apprentice from 1837-1852
Just a few notes and reminders . A deck apprentice prior to WW2 and after did not sign on the Articles of Agreement and received no discharge in his seamans book. A copy of his indentures was returned to him on satisfactory completion of his 4 years. His seatime was recorded on the back of the Indentures and signed by the Master with the name and particulars of ship. For the use of a BOT examiner of Masters and Mates. He received no official leave during the apprenticeship period. I have sent a photo to Vernon of a set of Shipping Federation Indentures but whether he will be able to read or not dont know. Rather than me try and copy all the fancy wording on such. There may be others on site who disagree with such as have said, but if it was prior to about 1960 they were not apprentices but Cadets whether they know it or not. The two were entirely different animals. The best of luck in your search. Cheers JS

I can’t imagine the wording on the indentures being much different between 1852 and 1952, the only definite difference would be the wages , and that would probably err on the side of frugality. Cheers JS.
