Beaverglen
My name is Ian McLachlan and I am trying to trace the Merchant navy career of my uncle, Charles Davie Millar, (b1887).After a long career in the RN, where he was awarded the Albert Medal. I think he went on to become a bosun on the Beaverglen, out of Liverpool,. Any information on him and/or the Beaverglen would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Re: Beaverglen
That's very kind of you, thanks. I have his RN and census info, but am completely stuck on the Merchant Navy stuff. I can remember as a child visiting him on the Beaverglen in the early 50's. I think it was berthed at the Albert Dock in London. But I think he must have been on other boats/ships because he brought home stuff from all over the world, some of which we still have.
The other info I have is: He was awarded the Albert Medal in 1918 and other medals were: 1914-15 Star, the Great war Medal,1914/18, the Bronze Medal 1914 -19, the1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, the 1939-45 medal, Long Service medal and an Italian Medal for action of Scicily and Calabria, 28th Dec. 1928. Family legend is that he was a cabin boy/deck hand on the whaler Terra Nova and was on the first trip to find Scott about 1904 ish!!

Re: Beaverglen
No, he didn't die at sea. I met him for the last time in the early 60's in Oakbank, Mid Calder. He gave me £10.00 and told me to go London, to an address in Leadenhall street, mention his name
and I would get a job on a ship. (I joined the RAF) Sorry Uncle Chay!
With regards to him being 12 years old, I made that mistake. he was actually signing on for 12 years. in the next column you will see he was actually 16.

Re: Beaverglen
If he was a holder of the Albert Medal, have said this before about someone else but don’t know if it was successful or not, as there was no feed back. The Albert Medal would come under an Investiture medal which would mean a visit to Buckingham Palace. I know for most awards received means that the records of such are kept at the chancellory , with the stipulation also that they be advised of change of address, and they be notified on death. The chancellery may or may not release any information they hold but on the slight chance they do it would probably be to family only, this is only a supposition but may be worth a try by the seeker of info.on his family. JS
If any use to anyone doing family trees the Investiture decorations and medals which records will probably be in the Chancellory records , are as follows , Think I have put on site before ? This was correct at time that the info. Was published in 1991.
Orders of Chivalry.
Order of the Garter. K.G.
Order of the Thistle K.T.
Order of Bath
Order of Saint Michael and St. George.
The Royal Victorian Order
The Order of the British Empire.
The Order of Merit
The Order of the Companions of Honour
Distinguished Service Order
Imperial Service Order
The Royal Victorian Chain
The Victoria Cross
The George Cross
The George Medal
Royal Red Cross
Distinguished Service Cross
Military Cross
Distinguished Flying Cross
Air Force Cross
Military Medal.
Queens Gallantry Medal
Polar Medal.

#15. At least one that I know of and others , the Duke of Edinburgh , Prince Philip , was Grand Master of, he will have had to be replaced since his death. Whether it goes to whoever has the title of the Duke of Edinburgh or not remains to be seen.

Re: Beaverglen
Duke of Edinburgh was I thought a title established for Phillip not one in use.
But it is though William may take it on.
