Robert Telford - two puzzles
Hi.
This is my first post.
As the title of my thread suggests, I have two questions.
Firstly, I am trying to fill in the gap in my grandfather Robert Telford's career as a merchant seaman. He was born in Sheffield in 1896 and his Dis. A. number was 1118947. From his discharge cards (?) I have details of his ships up to 1941 when he was on MV Imperial Star. The ship was torpedoed and scuttled, with some great effort, near Tunis during Operation Halberd (a Malta convoy) in 1941. He was transferred to HMS Heythrop and taken on to Malta.
There is then a gap to 1948 that I cannot fill. His last ship (?) in 1948 appears to be MV Orari and he was donkeyman at that time.
For his merchant seaman 'military' service he received Atlantic, Africa and Pacific Star medals. As I understand, MV Imperial Star did not enter the Pacific theatre so he must have been on at least one more ship during the war.
Can anyone suggest how I can find details for this 7 year period?
Secondly, Robert was awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal. I have been unable to find a commendation. It could have been related to his merchant seaman career. Any suggestions?
Thanking you in advance
Gary Telford

Re: Robert Telford - two puzzles
Hello Gary
Early days yet , as there seems to be a lot to look at.
But you say you have Cards ? Which are they please can you upload them so we can have a look.
Also he should have either a CR or CRS10 Cardd listing, which would give his full Merchant Navy Period, of Ships etc.
As said early yet, i will be looking into this later
Cheers
By the Discharge Number looks like the Records may be in the Original Southampton Archives?? However not sure yet?

The French Star was applied for but for some reason refused ? Thus the R showing
Often during the War period Records are hard to find, But will see what comes up
Cannot make out date on the CARD 1 135708 ?? Ship name was Nagara Royal Mail Line Southampton

Re: Robert Telford - two puzzles
With looking at what you already have think that is about as much as you will find, except possibly for a Photo of him when he joined. ?
The Ships list you can look at and work out which Ships they were, as for the Gap, that only remains to be seen if you can get his full CR10 from Southampton.
Good Luck on that
Cheers
