#1: Think the recent controversy to do with Rule Britannia is ill thought, in reality large scale singing this year with COVID is not recommended anyway. As for the rest: Rule, Britannia! is about freedom, not slavery.

This idea of British liberty as a birthright was crucial to the growing belief that slavery was wrong.

Considering a Scottish King was responsible for forming the UK in1603 and considering two Scottish poets were responsible for the wording of Rule Britannia, being a Scot I thoroughly enjoy listening to Rule Britannia where and whenever it is sung.
I would emphasize I'm also a Scot who believes in a United Kingdom.

How far do we need to go back?

After the Roman conquest in 43 AD, Britannia meant Roman Britain, a province covering the island south of Caledonia (roughly Scotland). When Roman Britain was divided into four provinces in 197 AD, two were called Britannia Superior and Britannia Inferior.

All well before what now is seen as a modern thing.

Great Britain was enslaved by the Romans after 55 BC and again in 1066 AD by the Normans (French); with the Danes and the Vikings dominating parts of our country for their own use, in between (remember ‘Dane Geld’). Don’t these people remember why the Military Canal and the Martello Towers were built, in the South of England?

What we need to do during our lifetime is to ensure that we learn from the past, and enable and promote equality and fraternity in all peoples.

Furo, in my opinion you ae correct about a United Kingdom.
Whilst Scotland has a lot going for it I do not think it is big enough to stand alone.
Then the problems with borders etc one must ask would separation be worth it?
