Was there any ruling and if so what sort of time was it when and if the vhf radio became compulsory on ships.? I can remember when it was advised that any vessel transmitting the St. Lawrence up to Montreal it became advisable to have one, otherwise the pilot had to bring his own , and suppose this went on to the pilotage cost. But I can remember being on ships up to 1969 without. Prior to having vhf radio all communication of other vessels was by lamp. After Vhf was common to moist vessels all the lamp got used for was to flash Vhf to other vessels if wanted to talk to. Did it come in as a legal requirement and if so did it come in when semaphore went out ? As believe semaphore is no longer required for BOT exams and hasn’t been for a long time. JS

The earliest I can find for the requirements to carry VHF is in the SOLAS 1974 amendment's.
Possibly that is when semaphore was dropped from 2nd mates exams.

Taken that one step further Ivan , could say all ships were moist , as all sweated. However posh one was, have you ever seen a person off a passenger ship saying my. Ship doesn’t sweat it perspires. ? Ever wonder where dew point got its name. Probably from some bad speller , who looked at the sky and said , looks like we are dew for some rain.more than likely a climate change advocate , where as the normal person would say my arthritis is kicking up.
Anyhow to bring VHF back into the equation I think that safety bod on board should have labels printed for all. The hand sets “ do not handle with wet hands”. With a note to the sign saying this includes wet beery hands . Cheers JS

Hi There.
When I qualified for my V.H.F. licence there was no
mention made of semaphore during or at the test,
that was in 1999.

#9.. what year are we talking about David ? Have never heard of a vhf licence , if there was one in my time I must have slipped through the net. There was a restricted Radio Telephony licence for an earth station which covered the 2182 ranges , maybe this was the one to cover the Vhf also ? Ah! See you say 1999 wasn’t GMDSS in by then , radio operators were mostly dinosaurs of the past , and flings aren’t wot they used ter be. The only thing I can remember that was stressed in the orals for signals was being aware and the use of Maydays , Pan, and Securitay messages. And think the D/F came in The Chartwork paper. Cheers JS
