Certificate of Continuous Discharge query

Hi folks,
Absolute newbie here, so apologies for the ABC question.
I'm researching my great-uncle's history in the merchant navy 1907 - 1916.
Recently a relative discovered his Certificate of Continuous Discharge which neither of us are familiar with.
The book shows his first engagement at age 20 was aboard the "Sir W.J.Lewis" from Sep 1907 to Nov 1907 and discharged in Hull.
Q: does the discharge date necessarily represent the end of that ship's voyage or could there have been several voyages on the same or other routes in that period?

Hi Paul.
Welcome to the site, there will be someone who will tell you whats what. But for me it looks like he did a three months trip, could be to the Baltic, Med, or even to the States, that would be a round trip calling at different ports.

Trip Number 6 cannot make out Ship ( Trem-olos ?? ) ( Treneglos) Edited to correct From 23 September 1909 to 14/12/09
Discharged Port David (Port Said) Edited to correct


Discharge dates just means that he finished that trip in wherever shown,the Ship would have been in Dock for a spell for cleaning,fresh Stocks, Cargo loading etc so no it would not mean the end of the line for a Ship so to speak.

Doc could that last discharge be Port Said and not David as I can not find a port David and the Master has refused to sign of the discharge might he have paid off sick or skinned out ??

I agree with Port Said. However the Master ,"Omitted to sign " which is a big difference to, "Refused to sign" I would like to see the following page - if there is one!

Can't make out the destination of voyage #1. #2 is St. Nazaire (France) and # 3;4;5; are River Plate. #6 is 'Foreign' which seems to cover a multitude of sins ! From my work on 1915 Crew Lists, 'Foreign' often meant tramping.

Barbara in my time at sea 'Foreign' just meant foreign going as opposed to H/T home trade or M/T middle trade I have it written in my own discharge books variously as Foreign,FGN. FGN R/A (Running Articles )and FGN unlimited. It made no difference as to whether I was sailing on one of the ships in the liner trades or a tramping cargo ship or tanker. One other piece of information is that Briton Ferry is/was the name of a port in Wales also I think the mystery of the last ship maybe the 'Treneglos' belonging to the Hain (Nourse) Line built in 1906 and sunk by torpedo in 1915 of Crete.

Thanks for the Finds appreciated ,i have corrected the Entries yes that Ship is correct and as said Sunk off Crete (Gavdos Island)

Hi John.
Briton Ferry was a small port in Wales, which makes me wonder whether the ship he was on then was a coaster as it was only a small place.
