SS. Etna
Hello Gentlemen,
I have just been reading Roy Denton's Tramp Ships, when I came across the back cover photo. The vessel featured was a small tramp steamer with 'Etna' written on the side. There is no mention of the ship in the book and no info on it online. I was wondering if anyone here might know about this Tramp and could provide basic info on it? I could provide the photo if you need it.
Thanks a lot, lads.
Cheerio,
Jim

Re: SS. Etna
Thanks Keith. It does not look like the one I'm looking for. A few differences, inc enclosed wheel house on my 'Etna'
I'll keep looking.

Yes, sorry, it is Roy Fenton
The one you found, Doc, is not the one either, unless, there have been serious modifications.
Will post photo soon.

Re: SS. Etna
###jimmy just as a matter of interest your vessel the ss etna ...the following story is from the ss effna......in south shields is a top electrical type factory it was involved in electronics when the war broke out.....a young man destined for a great career was given the choice not to be called up as he was involved in a top secret device much needed in the war effort .......some sad person stuck three white feathers on his locker ..which of cause is a cowards symbol......the young man went down to the seamans pool the very next day and was signed on as a trimmer ...that is a very hard job .....much before the press button type engine room of today .....it was mainly feeding coal to the fireman stoking the boilers .....the ship reached the states and he sent a letter to his family telling them it was hard work ...but he was getting used to it and would be home soon ......the effna was torpedoed in extremely heavy weather off greenland or iceland ..all hands were lost .....although a german photo of a ships crew in a lifeboat was stated to be the effna this was not possible as the weather was taking great toll on ships in general and it was later shown not to be he effna......my father married the sister of the young trimmer ......the family only got a letter saying the vessel was lost with all hands and that was about it ...on poppy day in shields certainly until a year or so ago a wreath was put on the seamans memorial at the mill dam near the shipping pool in shields......the u boat commander that torpedoed her said she went almost at once .....i showed the young mans sister before she passed the u boat commanders name and photograph it was a moving time for all concerned......i have often thought what feelings if any the person had who put the feathers on his locker felt....different views of the ships final moments have been discussed before .....if you google ss efna on the u boat site you will see some info ...the effna and etna were not ships from the same shipping line .....hope you found the story interesting ....regards cappy

Re: SS. Etna
There is an SS ETNA built by Caird of Greenock in 1855 for Cunard, she acted untill 1896.
Don't if it's her.
