Nearly all the Australian offshore ships I sailed on flew the Australian flag which as you all know is blue. The reason for this was because an Australian Red Ensign of ship size seemed to be like a hens teeth to find as the chandlers never seemed to have in stock, But as say flag etiquette is not what it used to be. You can see this when ex passengers off cruise liners say they were flying the Red Ensign with nothing on the fly.whats a very small fine if ever enforced against the prestige of saying they fly the red duster. Everything today is done with mirrors to get the advertising and prestige out of anything going for advertising reasons. The same as size of a ship, passengers think that makes them safer, it makes them more vulnerable to seas and weather conditions in my estimation, it is a disaster waiting to happen, and happen it will at some stage. No one has ever mastered the sea and never will . JS

#48... Rob re the Dan Brown books, he obviously researched the subject of freemasonry more accurately than the media ever does, but still way off the mark. However by a lot of members of the fraternity is considered friendly towards, as his books brought in quite a few candidates thinking the brotherhood was the same as his books. Thanks Dan. JWS.

#51... Fouro... the pub “ The Ship “ in Monkseaton, Whitley Bay, had a room called the Titanic Room, which has a huge painting of the Titanic on one of the Bulkheads. Next time in there will make a point of seeing if she is flying an ensign, at least may enlighten us as to what he thought when painting this work of art. Funny how we don’t notice things at the time right under our noses. Cheers JWS

With so much history and knowledge of the Titanic it is odd that the flag flown was not registered somewhere.

I recall going twice to see the Titanic exhibition when it was here in Melbourne.
There was a large piece of her side included in the exhibition, taken from close to the bow according to notice and it was pointed out where the Iron, not steel, rivets had been used.

Then there was Ms Jessop, sailed on the Titanic, Brittanic, and Olympic as a crew member, the only one to survive all three incidents.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Things never change. The Yanks built 2 bulk carriers back in the sixties call the Allen D Christensen and Hervey S Mudd, one shown on time magazine cover with story about the new american shipping expertise. Only thing was although it looked like and american flag it was actually Liberia.

Apparently H&W stamped the yard number on the propellors. Ballard on a dive on the Olympic focused on the propellors and the yard number stamped on the prop was clearly that coresponding to the correct ship.

I think you mean the Britannic Vic. Interesting video let it run and it will carry on to one about the Titanic conspiracy theory. I reckon the 40,000 work force employed by H&W may have mentioned to someone about the switch.

American ship owners were amongst the first to register their vessels under the Liberian flag, saying that they wished to help an emerging nation founded by freed slaves, in fact they avoided many domestic USA taxes by registering their vessels in Liberia, and in the early days US owned ships under the Liberian flags were even able to take advantage of the Jones Act whilst evading their own country's taxes, isn't business wonderful!
