Re: Largest populated cities in the world
I never knew that Kolkata was the new name for Calcutta. Took me a long time to get used to Mumbai being Bombay. Hope the second mates on all the ships of the British Merchant Navy have corrected in their chart corrections, that is if they still do. JWS

Re: Largest populated cities in the world
When you think back though is nothing unusual in name changing. Formosa became Taiwan, Ceylon became Sri Lanka. Apart from most also of the African nations. The changing face of Europe as regards the Balkan countries and Yugoslavia. The Middle East still trying to do through force of arms on religious grounds. The voice of human kind is very unstable and always wanting change. Usually not for the better. Politicians of the west are always boasting about how many Bills they get passed, they forget to mention how useless most of those Bills usually are. The best Bills up to date are still the old ones of the 10. Commandments now almost disappeared. IWS

Re: Largest populated cities in the world
Another change
Gauteng (/ɡɔːˈtɛŋ/; Sotho pronunciation [xɑ́úˈtʼèŋ̀]), which means "place of gold", is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal Province after South Africa's first multiracial elections on 27 April 1994. It was initially named Pretoria–Witwatersrand–Vereeniging (PWV) and was renamed "Gauteng" in December 1994.[3]
Situated in the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, accounting for only 1.5% of the land area.[4] Nevertheless, it is highly urbanised, containing the country's largest city, Johannesburg, its administrative capital, Pretoria, and other large industrial areas such as Midrand and Vanderbijlpark. As of 2017[update], Gauteng is the most populous province in South Africa with a population of approximately 14,200,000 people according to estimates
