Furo #20, I was not in any way attempting to bring down the standing of bus drivers, just trying to make a point that here in Oz we have very little discrimination between jobs and titles. Bus driver was the first name that came into my head.
Gulliver #22, yes we have compulsory attendance at a polling booth to have our registration marked off. Voting is not compulsory as unlike some countries no one holds a gun to your head and tells you vote or else.
Many once they have been registered do not bother to vote.
But we have how to vote cards, that is each party will pass out cards showing the order of preference in which you should number the parties.
The proportional representation system we have is not the best, first past the post as in UK is far better. Under our system one can gain the biggest majority of primary votes and still not win.
But at least our system makes it very hard to say, don't blame me I did not vote for them.

Re: June 8th
Some interesting news out of Oz today in which you may consider your gov introducing.
Our gov has changed the rules for immigration.
If you come here now and wish to become an Australian citizen you will need to be here for four years now, it was three.
You will need to be able to demonstrate you can now speak English, that you have intergrated into the local society and are working. You must also be prepared to live under our laws and not those of other countries.
If during the four year period you are found guilty of a crime you will be deported.
If you are involved with child marriage as is the custom of some faiths you will not be allowed to stay.
You will be allowed one wife only and female circumcision will be made illegal for all.
There is also a proposal that if you are found guilty of certain crimes after taking up citizenship that will be revoked and you deported.
The plan is to make all who come here value our laws, our values and our way of life.

Re: June 8th
As well as Oz bringing in new immigration laws I do understand NZ is also considering some stronger ones.
Trump is trying there to do something similar and the Right wing in many western countries is on the move, the looney lefty and Greens have done so much damage to so many nations.
All nations must have control of their own borders, laws, and culture not those imposed by some other entity.
