Nothing wrong with off springs selling campaign medals on e=bay ETC... Personally the collection i have from a long traditional seafearing family, If i never had a pot to piddle in i would never part with. And they are to be handed to the youngest grandchild even after my number is up that has my christian name, Including mine with strict orders they are never sold. Wear it with pride John, I'm sure the original recipient would not object, also if you were at sea during the era of National Service then you are entitled to wear it, they were available at the Shipping Federation offices at that time, but of course a lot of then young men didn't collect them as they didn't realise that one day they would be old and cherish their memories

On the Orari we just made it through the canal a couple of days before it was closed, so we could have been stuck there,
I know some were. I didn't know the badges were held at the Shipping Federation Office as it wasn't advertised, or I would
have asked for one had I known. PS, What I meant Ivan was that the man who had the badge was at sea during the war
while I was still at school, as this is a genuine silver WWII badge. cheers JC

He would want you to wear it John for the sake of himself and those he knew who didn't make it, the more symbols we wear the more people will ask questions and the more we can educate them about the sacrifices made on their and their parents behalf, I have found that people are genuinely interested once they've asked what is the badge for

Ivan, One of the reasons i have insisted on my family collection going to the youngest grandchild, In maybe 50 yrs when we are no more and a youngster tells a teacher or delves into Merchant Navy archives on the www, It may just stir up an interest into the sacrifices the men of the Merchant Navy endured in the name hopfully of world peace. I am still unsure on this post about the MN badge. As I say the only one I have seen in the past was the Red Ensign in a much smaller version of the one I received recently. I am still in communication with the MNA as of yesterday and if needs be can always ask them, the overall badge itself is 35mm by 20 mm. The what I assume is a coronation crown extends above the badge itself for another 7mm. Attached to the crown on the badge itself is a white circle in the centre of which in gold is an Admiralty anchor with crossed swords and a couple of what I assume are wings around the edges of the white circle is HM Armed Forces, all this is in gold underneath adjoining the white circle in blue background but written in gold is written veteran. This is all superimposed on the Red Ensign. I expected at the most a Red Ensign with veteran on it or even just a Red Ensign. The pictures shown on here earlier bears very little resemblance to what I received. Anyhow is now on one of my jackets above the Square and Compasses. Cheers JS
