Pub Name
Do any of you guys in Liverpool remember the name of a pub in Fenwick Street. It was next door to the Corn Exchange Building.I have been wracking my brains all day trying to remember the name of the place. You had to go down a flight of stairs to get to the bar. The furnishings were all in red leather. I used to drink in the place in the afternoons when on leave back in the 60's. At that time the Manageress was an ex Bibby and Cunard stewardess, Joan Witherspoon. Anybody got any ideas.

Re: Pub Name
John the first one that comes to mind that had 2 entrances was the Slaughter House. Also known as Bennets, And O.neils bar.

Re: Pub Name
Hi Terry, not the Slaughter House mate, and it only had one entrance, down a flight of stairs = which would illegal these days.
On Fenwick street there was a block of shops which included a cake shop and stamp collecting shop. As you looked at the shops,on one end was a Bents pub which I never drank in as didn't like their ale and on the other end of the block was the pub I am trying to remember. I think the Slaughter House was on the opposite side of the street

Trivia
FENWICK STREET
Named after Edward Moore's in-laws. His wife was the daughter of William Fenwick of Meldon Hall, Northumberland. The street was sometimes referred to as Phoenix Street or Phenwych Street.

Re: Pub Name
Seems it has a Downstairs !??
Slaughterhouse (Bennet's) (O'Neill's)
Pic John Smith's / Carling, Foster's The "music room" is a dark and dingy but rather atmospheric cellar used for live music. The upstairs is a nicely done fake antique "Irish" bar with wooden floor and some ancient looking ceiling beams. The floor vibrates with the noise of the band downstairs! The two handpumps were out of use when I visited.
Up to the early 60s this was a Bass house called Bennet's Wine Merchants.
Take a trip down memory lane all ye Liverpool Lads

Re: Pub Name
Could it have been this one JC ?? I am of course just guessing as I never really knew Liverpool, much the pity I feel as I know I lost out on some good times !
Cheers
The Cornmarket pub is one of the oldest pubs in Liverpool (1700s) with a fantastic interior and excellent rotating real ales.On Fenwick street (old ropery) this pub was once 2 pubs knocked into one (The bulls Head and the Cornmarket) and is housed in the Britannia buildings.
Or ??? Namesake Liverpool!??

Jenny’s Bar
A drinking den with a disco twist, Jenny’s Bar is a cracker. Located in the business district, from outside it looks like a washed out fish bar but of course this is an illusion. Go down the steps and enter a world of velvet and good vibes. The bar is also home to Liverpool’s Whisky Business – you’re in good hands with the drink selection.

Re: Pub Name
John the only pub I can think of down there is the Cornmarket.I posted on this in January regarding the wood panelling which is supposed to have come off the Rena-Del-Pacifico.It was a pub used by MN people and even today Blue Flu men meet there once a month. The address is the Ropery but it is part of Fenwick Street I think.

Re: Pub Name
Vernon, Jim - Many thanks, yes it was the Cornmarket. The name had been eluding me for days and although I could picture the place I could not for the hell of me recall the name. I had no idea the place was still going as all of the pubs you remember seem to have disappeared.
