Re: Non UK student in a UK nautical college?
Keith I would be the first to admit I do not understand the thinking of getting certification for the ranks of 2,1 mate, and master. In our day qualifying sea time to be able to sit these examinations the sea time had to be on a trading vessel, this no doubt has disappeared and in its place has appeared seatime if someone off some rich mans yacht can put himself up for qualifications which include the care, carriage and handling of cargoes with no practical experience whatsoever I wonder at the competency of such to be able to do. In 1986 I was offered a masters job with Clyde Marine Recruitment until they had found out I had been sailing as master in the oil industry and said I would be out of practice on a dry cargo vessel and withdrew the job. At least I had the experience to do and could have done it no problems as was drummed into one in the old days. The position that I see now there are few people sailing with any sort of experience re yester year and are all so called specialists in one field. Any seaman worth his salt can walk aboard any vessel and do the job, the trouble is there are few and far between left. Cheers JS

Re: Non UK student in a UK nautical college?
#11... Just watched the Utube advert for the M.N. I just cant imagine myself being that naïve and young and yet those students are 18 plus. Even the instructors look like a generation back to me so just shows how out of date some of us are. I am only too pleased we learned our profession the time honoured way of on the job, not to be taken as on the job in another way. The person doing the voice of describing the MN and the UK being dependant on shipping could have gone into it a bit more deeply and let the world know how progressive British governments did not agree with this and was therefore a distinct lack of British shipping available for them in the future. Anyhow I hope all the youngsters shown in those clips can make a worthwhile career in their chosen profession and the best of luck to them and hope it lives up to their expectations. Cheers JS

Re: Non UK student in a UK nautical college?
Ref to the Dickerson Tide, I just out of interest googled the name and there she is in 1984 ( I was on her in 97 ) the photo was taken in the Yarmouth UK area so she must have got around, I picked her up in Port Moresby and was working off the NW coast of Australia with her. If anyone does google, the big yellow reel on the starboard side was the seismic cable which was lead aft through leads and over the stern roller, was about a mile in length. The housing built high up is the room where all the boffins sat with their computers. There were about 15/20 boffins. The only problem was when going alongside always had to be port side to as the cable reel was permanent. Cheers JS

Re: Non UK student in a UK nautical college?
John ref 12, everything is dummed down it seems, i was only an AB at sea, but came to that rank via the normal route, deck boy- AB, and all the ranks between, as posted before, i believe nowadays they come straight from training school as EDH, having never set foot on a ship, Brian Kong posted having to throw a guy off the wheel , not knowing Port from Starboard , would not have been a lot of good on lookout either, thats if they indulge in such luxuries these days!!. I know modern ships with modern paint systems do not need as much maintenance as in my day, can only assume its all done by shore gangs, KT
