Funeral for my granddad
Hi,
I have no idea whether this is the right place to ask this. My granddad served in the Merchant Navy when he was a lad (as did my father, his son).
He entered 'end of life' yesterday so will very soon no longer be with us.
I have heard that there may be a way to involve the merchant navy in the funeral, allowing his ashes to be taken out to sea. I've googled but I can't find anything about whether this is possible which is when I came across this forum.
Any ideas would be greatly received. As you can imagine it was a big part of my dads and granddads life, and would be fitting to be incorporated in the the inevitable upcoming funeral.
Thank you,
Danielle

Re: Funeral for my granddad
Hi Danielle ,.
So sorry to here of Your Granddad, the loss of an old Sailor is always felt on here.
Keep looking in, someone will help you with some good advice.
If you can give as much information as possible, his name and when he was at sea and so on, also the town where he is.
More information the better to get the best results.
Also if you live in a seaport ask your local "The Mission to Seafarers" they are always keen to help.
All the best to you and your family.
Brian

Re: Funeral for my granddad
I see no reason why his ashes could not be scattered at sea. There would be some means of getting out by one of the costal towns on a boat of some sort. Good luck with that and my condolences on the loss of your grandfather.

Re: Funeral for my granddad
As said by John
No reason not to be able to scatter his ashes at Sea think all one needs to do is to apply for permission from possibly the Local Council or the Maritime Industry???
However I am not too sure on this!
Please also accept my Condolences on your sad loss!
May his sails be filled with calm winds and take him to the places he so loved and enjoyed!
RIP
Sincerely
Hiring a small craft should be easy enough!
Possibly the Skipper would just let you do it anyway without any dramas!

Re: Funeral for my granddad
I scattered the ashes of two old friends, ex seamen , in the sea off the Mull of Galloway a few years ago.
No problems.
Several old sailors have had their ashes scattered from the Mersey Ferry in the Mersey.
Please let us know where you are.

Re: Funeral for my granddad
I was on the Mersey ferry when a family came aboard with the ashes of a family member. The captain slows the ferry right down,a crew member takes care of them aft the ashes and a wreath can be placed over the side.My mate finished his time working on the ferries he said it was a regular occurrence.
Regards.

Re: Funeral for my granddad
A number of years ago when my mother died it had been her wish for her ashes to be scattered in Scotland. My brother took them up to do so, but decided to go to the local kirk to do it right. He was told it was against the law to scatter without permission and had to pay to have them scattered on hallow ground. I would just have gone ahead and done without permission. Here in Australia I went to the wake of someone I knew it was held outside of a hotel in their private gardens, the wife of the departed person just threw the ashes out of the urn onto a flower bed, no permission requested. Would suggest you do with the ashes as you see fit and not get tied up with officialdom. Both my dogs died a few years ago and I have their ashes buried in the backyard with a rose and small stone with their names on. I would hate to see whatever the ruling on burying ashes are that Brussels holds on the subject. Regards John S
