Bill think Ivans post correct that it is 75 North and 60 South. He says he is only a small fellah, but must have a memory like an elephant as he never forgets. Only when it is the bill that cappy promised to pay. Cheers JS

When working out the pay off if we were away for the month of February did we get a months pay for the 28 days ??.Was the months pay based on the date you signed on,so if you signed on on the 3rd of a month the 3rd of the next month you had a month in.

Getting smaller all the time John, apparently I've lost 1.5 inches in height in the last ten years, however I do know where it has gone, it has tripled and reassigned itself to my waist. Unfortunately no memory like an elephant just an old tome, Business and Law for the Shipmaster

#12.If say you worked from Jan 6th to May 8th. This would be 4 months and 3 days. From Jan 6th to May 5th would be 4 months. The daily rate was the monthly rate divided by thirty. If you were on 60 pounds a month your daily rate would be 2 pounds. Pay off is in the saloon at 1400 hrs. the Ch Stwd has the rail warrants. The cop on the gate wants a quid as you go out, don't over tip the porters at Lime Street, as it sets a precedence and some don't like tipping. Expect a call from the pool next week. Yours was an easy one to work out as total wages is 246 pounds, you had no overtime, your deductions for tax are 20 pounds, and NHI 6 pounds, before subs given you a total of 220 before subs of 200 pounds which you drew in Montreal. Leaving you with 20 pounds, plus you have 5 sundays at sea and 5 days voyage leave equal 10 days at 2 pound equalling 20 pounds minus tax giving you 15 pounds. Total amount to seafarer is 35 pounds. Your first round in pub is only about 20 of us. Have a good leave. Cheers JS PS Cappy is the one who doesn't like tipping. JS

On FG Jim it was 'per calendar month' you lost out on the 31 day months but gained on the February, but it evened out over the year, of course you also could lose out or gain on crossing the Date Line. On HT and MT and running agreement pay was on a weekly basis, but there was an option to pay RA on a monthly basis, but that was rarely an option exercised.

#8... That's really going by the book Bill, waiting until outside Home trade Limits. We used to open on discharging the pilot, if not before if he was after cigs and a bottle. Think as soon as out of territorial waters would be the official one, maybe is in Ivans book. Cheers JS

Here we are, everything you need to know (as if)
Re: limits of trading, excluding HT etc which no longer exist anyway, the limits I always inserted was 65 deg N and S. Reason being...no ice strengthening of ice classification so therefore without having to obtain exemption from class to enter Artic/Antartic waters with per. ice, we could trade freely world wide.

#6 were the stipulated limits in force at the time we oldies were at sea say 50's/70's. Seems there is more latitude (pardon the pun) to draw up agreements to suit particular trades these days. In our day it was 'Sign-on' and 'Stay-on'

#10 Ivan just had a look at my piece of cardboard issued in Sept. 2001, this was to replace Master FG (Steamship) Which you will still have, as is now out of date. Inside is a little plan (wont call it a chart) of UK coast of Europe and mediteranean with all the areas marked with different areas with lines dots to differentiate goes from Dakar to the white sea and covers the whole of the Meddy. What happens when one goes to China or anywhere else in the world -don't know as not shown. However the UK is still marked UK, certs, after this may however just be coloured in as Europe. You are also told your functions at first when I read I thought they were referring to bodily functions, knew I was alright as had been properly potty trained as a baby. Anyhow there are 7 of them. There are also 3 levels of responsibility, M (management level) O (operational level) S ( support Level). I assume this is in case you get smitten with memory loss and can always refer to. I assume this is the standard cert. issued to all E.U. countries, either that or the government is trying to cut back on expenditure. Anyhow I should have looked at before now, as could have said when anyone looking for me on the ship " Excuse me I am just going to have a function" and disappear. On this map of the world as it is I assume to be the areas now are Limited European Area, Limited European Area 1st may to 30th may, Extended European Area (all year), Extended European area NB. Extended European Area includes limited European Area. I get the impression that the designer of this piece of bric a bac was not a Euro Sceptic, but an Anglo septic. Stick with the memories like me of bygone days dusky maidens and don't ponder too much on the shrinkage. Cheers Regards John S
