I see that the Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund is finally to be wound up. Has anyone any ideas how this is to be done -- I did write to the Trustees who eventually replied to say that an explanation of the strategy to be used would be posted to me in about seven weeks time, saying that they had been so overwhelmed by queries from past seafarers that a reply would take that length of time !! Regards Peter in NZ.

Peter, I started a thread on the MNOPF sometime ago, under the same title, if you have written to the Trustees that's all you can do at this moment, they are still investigating how the fund can be wound up without affecting any claims that people may on the fund. Why this is happening I don't know, someting to do with amalgamation of two similar funds that were runningbut there was a cut off date for claims which I posted on this site, which is two months from 10th February 2014 and only affects those who served in the MN prior to 5th April 1978

I have had letters from same as well. Think in my case it was to see if I was still alive. I was told it was the old pension rights as Ivan says pre 1978. As the bulk (what little there is) is in this part, I was told there was nothing to do that it would be automatic. Wouldnt really know of any changes otherwise as goes straight into the bank, after exchange rates etc. have been applied. Will know when get P45 sometime well after April if there has been any alteration in the amount, but doubt there will be. Cheers John S

I already receive a small pension from the fund and have just been sent a nine page (printed on both sides) letter explaining exactly how the new administrators will be managing the old section/new section of the fund and how it effects me. Having read it twice I am none the wiser so if anybody receives the same and is a bit/lot more erudite than me and has the patience to explain it please do so.

#4... John I received a small booklet on it some time ago. Havent even gone through it. Was too much jargon in it for me. They will pay what they want to pay, have had fights with pension funds before, there is only one winner that is them. They have the legal expertise we dont. Fortuanetly what I get as a pension from them is deducted from my Australian Pension, so hoping if they lower the pension the Australian Government will make up the difference. Years ago we thought our future in retirement was secure, some hopes on that, from birth to the grave we have been seen off by various thieves and vagabonds, not referring to the pension fund which up until now has been run satisfactory. Cheers John S

I recieved several pages printed on both sides last week, you need to be a Philidelphia Lawyer to understand it.
The buy out of the wind up of affects the Old Section only,
Does that mean that the Old Section Payment will be No More?
If so that will cut my Pension in half.

They have changed the name on MNPA to ENSIGN.

I have this months Pension and it is still the same. apart from More Income Tax paid after the Government said Tax is reduced.

When I went ashore , so many people were getting out early with sickness and disabilities , I transferred both sections to the Co-op , I mean where safer than the Co-op Bank ? . I understood that the new section devalued the pension from 1/40 th to 1/80 th of pensionalbe salary per year served , and wiped my worries away feeling escape was good at teh time

Brian that must be the same document that I received, I have ALLWAYS found legal documents that were printed on both sides of the page to be numbered in sequence 1,2 etc. or even a,b,c or something similar. These Bu**ers have established a new way to confuse and annoy me by negating to do this. There is the equivalent of an 18 page letter that I have no idea now which is the opening page. (Do you remember those letters that you used to receive that began Dear Sir/Madam on the first page, this does not.) The only page I THINK is in sequence is the last page which reverts to the norm by saying yours sincerely but I could be wrong. Iam just living in hope that I get my normal pension at midnight tonight, and then I can ignore the whole thing.

    Hi John,
MY Pension has been paid for April, there was a £2 increase, BUT an extra £5 deducted in tax.
so I am now £3 out of pocket now. How do they do that when Mr Cameron, call me Dave, said tax is being reduced.
I phoned them and they said they have to deduct what the tax man says. my tax code has been reduced.
    Sometimes you just cant win.
    Cheers
    Brian.
