Could 15 degrees be out on sidelights? I always learned 22,5 or 2 points.

If the lamp is from a barge could it be an outside port light when they tie barges alongside and get towed ? Or else stern lamp for a following barge to steer on? Otherwise PLA local regs .

Quite right Bob, it was two points abaft the beam, it was late at night and the old memory not as sharp as it should have been, I knew as soon as I pressed the submit button it was wrong but was too tired to look it up or correct it, only goes to show, say in haste repent at leisure!

Still haven't found any reference to blue lights in my books apart from Police and Customs and they were all round none flashing

I have a lamp on gimbles in my garage some where amongst the junk.
It is a mast head light. and when fixed it swings with the roll of the vessel. it is also an oil lamp. Very old. I also have in there amongst more junk, two brass mast head lights , electric. and an Anchor light

consider this.It could be a tricolour light from a yatch. These were located on the masthead with the white light astern which if you think about it would give the reason for the red light on the right.

But surely if the white light was pointing to the stern, the red light would be on the left, and should be blanked off from the stern position?, still cannot think of a blue, think Rogers idea of sun causing colour change most likely. KT

Agree John that most of the ships had these lift in/out coloured screens/shades, but they tended to be on the bigger ships, but on some of the coasters I sailed on the actual glasses were coloured and in the Marina chandlers on the smaller sizes the tricolour lamps the glasses tend to be coloured. Unfortunately Jayne has not given us the size of the lamp that is causing us to rack our brains and consult what few books we have left. But a nice question anyway Jayne that got us on a nautical track once again, so thanks for that. And Cappy behave yourself we don't know what tender years Jayne is

I have a large brass navigation lamp, no red or green, just white, but it has large swivelling handles top and bottom with loops to allow it to be hoisted from a halliard, could these handles be mistaken for gimbals?
