Brown & Polson were a Paisley company and after teh take over by CPC foods part of Unilever , I assume they may have been on Unilever's site in Warrington , which I think was Bank Quay

My only memories of the canal was taking iron oar up to either Irlam or Salford, can't remember which one, anyone tell me? I also remember that we tied up at Runcorn for the night on the way up.

It was at Trafford Park Jim not far from Mode Wheel lock the last one before the Salford docks. Not too far from Man U's ground at Old Trafford. The Carchester was a regular runner there with maize, she was said to be the largest ship to get to Manchester.

The iron ore carriers used to go to the Lancashire steelworks at Irlam jetty, at I believe Eccles just west of Manchester.

Ron, Lancashire Steel were at Irlam itself. Further up the canal at Eccles, just before the main docks, were two wharfs at Weaste. One was an Oil berth and the other was a sulphur berth. That berth is still in use I believe for loading scrap

I joined a Houlder Bros. Iron ore boat at Irlam, the "Orelia". We had to come all the way up to Manchester through three locks to turn round and all the way back again.

    Default Manchester docks.

Hi Alec,I paid off thr Oregis on the canal after returning from Poti on the Black sea.I jumped a cab from the ship to the railway station, what station would that be.I wasn't worried about the cost as I had one of the best pay offs that I ever had.
    Regards.

don't know much about the canal except having to wait at the swing bridges when I was driving my lorry. I also delivered to warehouses in the Salford dock area, but most of it was abandoned and derelict with rusty train rails every where.

Apologies for the bad spelling, should read "ore".
