compo
The worst one I heard of, was a deck-hand on a Esso v.l.c.c. that was sailing from Milford Haven and the tugs tow wire whipped round the bitts and took both his legs off while the tug was letting go. I believe the man was well looked after by Esso, and I believe he was given a shore job at some time..Not long after the incident the tugs were towing with 'eye on the bitts' wires which a lot of tug masters didn't like as the tugs in those days were towing 'on the hook'. The next generation of tugs at Milford were fitted with a winch which solved the problem of letting go.

In my time at sea I had a lot of accidents, never once got any Compo.
I fell off the mast table when I was rigging a Jumbo on the Tarkwa in Port Harcourt, my hands were greasy from the wires and blocks and so I slipped and fell 50 feet, into the winch bed. I broke two legs and an arm. I came out of hospital on sailing day. the Mate asked the alcoholic ships Doctor if I was fit to work, He said well he has one good arm, so I had to work. The crowd carried me out on deck ans sat me down, I could chip the deck with hammer sweep it up and red lead with the one arm.
The big problem was Smoko , all hands would leg it aft and leave me and also when the monsoon started the same and I was soaked. I got the Union to claim against Elder Dempsters, after 12 months I had to ask them , `how have I got on. ` They said `Oh we forgot to tell you , you lost the case, they said it was your own fault for letting go`.
I had many other accidents at sea, legs crushed and bad cuts and others , never got a penny.
Four years ago I was passenger on the QE2, they painted my cabin with solvent paints, I was ashore at the time, returned to find the cabin full of fumes. The air was shimmering. I complained to the Purser, she said `It will be OK after two houirs` , two hours later I went into the cabin and was overcome by fumes, some one saw me in distress, lucky I left the cabin door open. They sent for the Medics and I was carried to the Medical Centre and puit to bed on Oxygen,
When I got home I tried to sue Cunard, I had one of those `No Win No Fee` lawyers, after two months he gave up, and said `No Chance`,
I found another `No Win No Fee Lawyers , He tried for another six months. Then he said , `No Chance`.I took them to court myself and did my own case. By this time I had learned enough of Legal Jargon and with the aid of the Internet on legal matters, I won £3,000 compo.
The only time I have ever had any compo in all my life.
Cheers
Brian
