Mauretania in Wartime Livery Sydney 19th August 1045.jpg
72 years ago! There are always links, great maritime links, here on Cunard liners. I met a man today who returned home from war in the Pacific, from Singapore to Liverpool, on the Mauretania. The year was 1946. "There was 6,000 of us onboard," he remembered. "There were still hints of the ship's pre-war luxury – the polished woods and the large mirrors. But there were few comforts. We were twenty to a room. And it was very, very hot, especially in the Indian Ocean. Many of us slept on deck."
Photo: Here's the Mauretania at Sydney, but in August 1945.
