    The heroic ile de france

    Sixty years ago today ...

The legendary Ile de France, which was 40 miles from the collision scene
between the Andrea Doria & Stockholm and herself steaming toward Europe, reversed course after receiving the SOS. She arrived with her twin funnels floodlit and her name in neon letters switched on as well. She became a modern-day hero – "the valiant ship" as she was dubbed – and was later given the Gallant Ship Award by the US Coast Guard. In recent years, the plaque was in in the French Line archives stored in Le Havre.
