May I ask how old you are, and if you are still at school or some other form of education. Their are still shipping Companies who may( with the appropiate education, endorse you. Those Companies are very few. I by the way am talking of UK Companies. I wish you well in your endeavour. R 796905

    Anthony,

I am 17 and am currently at Sixth Form (Upper Sixth, Year 13) completing my A Levels. I am due to leave school in August 2011 with the hope of gaining sponsorship for September 2011 entry. Of my basic knowledge, there seems to be three ways of joining the Merchant Navy: Scholarship Organisations, Shipping Companies and Training Organisations. If you could confirm this or not, I would be very appreciative and any help you have to offer would be brilliant.

    Regards,

    James.

    James,
you can apply to shipping Companies. Cunard sometimes take on Cadets. they sometimes advertise on their web site. Cunard .com. or try the colleges, Fleetwood Nautical College, or Liverpool Maritime cademy and Hull and so on.
Some of the Tanker Companies do it BP or Shell.
Depends on what type of vessel you would enjoy sailing on.
Tankers, container ships, you travel the world but you dont see the world , just the sea and a terminal for about four or five months. Cruise Companies you will see something of the best ports.
I know a lad who started with Cunard, I saw him as a Cadet on QE2, the QM2 as third Mate and again on QE2 as Second Mate. so there are opportunities.
    Good luck with your search.
The best times have gone about forty years ago. but it is still a good career

Thanks for the information. I've applied to many shipping companies, including Cunard and am attending an open day at Warsash Maritime Academy. Should hopefully improve my knowledge then.

    Regards,

    James.

    Hi James,
A good website to help you out is www.careersatsea.org , it is a government website with a lot of information for potential cadets.

Fantastic - this is just what I need. A list of sponsorship companies: I better get applying.

    Regards,

    James.
