Re: Hello
Hi David.
Welcome mate, don't have to many former Radio operators on site that I can recall, especially as they were the most important man on a ship, at one time I aspired to be a radio operator but every time there was a vacancy at the school I was shanghaied.
Cheers Des

Re: Hello
Was not a Radio Operator on the Ships but was one when in the RAF.
It was a good position and i enjoyed it , did the Actual Wireless Op training at Compton Basset UK. Was Ground to Air and got to speed of 24 WPM which was quite good with the Mechanical Key then, however the Royal Navy Guys beat us with their Sidewinders (Sideswipers) at times it was difficult to read them, but we managed LOL
Cheers

Re: Hello
Interesting. 15s code, 20s plain language was needed for the ticket and I never got any better than that. The kit was my 'interest'.

Re: Hello
Welcome to the site, there are one or two of us 'masters of a defunct profession' here. R/O P&O 73 - 82 - did the Advanced Cert in Marine Electronics and saw the writing on the bulkhead for R/O's with satellites coming up over the horizon. Never fancied working for the Ch Eng (sorry Chief's but I suspect you wouldn't have wanted an awkward cuss ex R/O in your smooth running departments) so I swallowed the anchor. Still miss it, perhaps more now than in earlier years.
