Have just joined as a result of research I was undertaking to find pictures of vessels I sailed on between 1966 an 1973. They were all Houlder Bros vessels. If anyone sailed on these during this period, or remember me, would love to hear from you:-

Orepton, Duquesa, Cerinthus, St Merriell, Clydesdale - all as Cadet. Orelia, Clymene, Orotava Bridge, Joya McCance - all as third mate. Clymene as second mate.

    Smile Welcome

Hello and welcome to the site Colin. Nice to see another Houlder's man onboard. You were just finishing as I started in 1973. I see you were on the Orotava Bridge. I did three different trips on her, once while she was called just "Orotava", then she went back to "Orotava Bridge" and finally changed to "Ripon Grange". Always a very happy ship and over the years I saw a lot of different places while aboard. Will always remember being o her during Typhoon Tip, which at the time was the strongest Typhoon ever recorded. Plus we got to see Mount St Helens blowing as we sailed from Portland! Anyway hope you enjoy your time with us and find others from your era.

    Tony

Many thanks for the photos. They are a lot better than the ones I got from Ships Nostalgia. I'm still navigating my way (excuse the pun) around this Forum. Its great to read stories and memories from old Red Dusters. Like most on this Forum, we're all getting older and the memory is not what it used to be, so its excellent when you read something that jogs the memory. It could be a port of call, a favourite bar in Boogy Street, talking about the box of 35mm films you got and had to show to the crew for more times that you could count when you were a cadet.

I would very much like to be an active member of the Forum , and once I'm comfortable with how the forum works I might start up some threads that wil stir the blood !!!

Thanks for posting Tony. Just took a look at my Discharge Book and found out that I joined the Oratava Bridge as 3/O, 6th May 1971 whilst it was in dry dock in Palermo, and paid off in Brake on 21st Sept 1971. We went from Palermo to Pebbles (Sierra leone) and loaded Iron Ore for Japan. Then cleaned holds between Japan and Sydney, then loaded grain at Glebe Island for Brake (Germany). Bloody long trip and was more than glad to pay off.

I did two stints on Clymene July 1970 to February 71 as 3/0,and then July 72 to January 73 as 2/0. She was my last ship before I went shoreside, and yes, she was a good tanker, nice clean refined oils not like that bloody horrible crude we carried on the Cerinthus and Joya McCance
