thank you for the welcome.
Hi Folks
Although i am not Ex Merchant Navy i have a lot of connections with the service. My maternal Grandfather was i believe a Captain. my Aunt was a Stewardess with the White Star Line working up to a First Class Stewardess with Cunard as we lived near Liverpool we would always go to meet her when she returned from a voyage. But the purpose in my joining is that i am trying to find some info on a relative, actually the husband of my aunt, His name was Joseph j Hunt and he died in 1917 in the far east i believe it was in French Indo China. I believe he died in Haipong Naval Hospital and is Buried in Hanoi. i can find nothing on standard Family Search Sites so i was wondering if it is possible that any member here may be able to give me a clue to where i may find any info. Oh he may have been with the Union Castle Line

Re: thank you for the welcome.
HUNT, Joseph James. Born Wrexham, Denbighshire 1887. Certificate of Competence no. 006408. Second Mate 1911. ????
If you look at Joseph's 2nd Mate Certificate on Ancestry, and move to the pages before and afterwards you will see another 4 documents relating to him. These give details of his exam as well as details of his height, hair colour etc., amongst other things.
Info found on the Intenet

Re: thank you for the welcome.
Not sure as to this but if he got his Cert. in 1911 the following Link could be his Record of that Cert! Dates covered are from 1887-1918 and Numbers covered are 06000-07884 so possibly they only used the one Zero 06408 not the two..IE 006408
Cheers

Re: thank you for the welcome.
#5... Marian to anyone looking for past relations and you quote a certificate as Steamship, in case they think this is going back to the olden days , it is not. I think all British certificates were up until about the 1980"s were marked such, previous to Steamship they were marked Sail. Today with the certificates and the agreement I suppose with other countries they are probably down to the lowest common denominator and are marked Class, going from 1 to either 5 or 6. Just in case the receivers of your thanked for information are not mislead by the word Steam. Unfortuanetley there are no certificates as a square rigged ticket in sail, as there are no one left alive who has one to examine you. I doubt it wont be too long before there are any examiners left to examine in the old steamship either. Steamship literally stands for a power driven vessel. The foreign certs. only have vessel of any tonnage on them but suppose they may also have changed by now. The certificate numbers on British tickets were always kept by the old B.O.T. and a way to the ticket owners particulars should by rights be able to be discovered, unless even that habit has fallen by the wayside also. Keep up the good work. We all learn something new every day. Best Regards JS
