No John it was not a Tyne based ship , he learned his galley skills on Runcimans , and I never remember having beans on toast for tea
Dont know where you would of got the toast from, unless the second cook decided to do a bit of baking, could have toasted it on top of the stove, I suppose. There was always a pot of tea on the stove stewed over and over again, got changed at least twice a week. Always good feeders Runcimans, Dalglieshes were always jealous of their reputation, however think Chapmans were even better again I am told, used to put jam on the table occassionally. Gulf Oil were quite good feeding ships , to eggs for breakfast 3 in an omelette , very rarely ever longside so less opportunity for the chief steward to fiddle the rations , but after coming across seafarers from other companies , I was surprised at some of the money saving delicacies that were presented as a meal , including the cheese beano , bowl of broth , and breastless chickens , Some of the cheaper stuff turned out as well done by some of the more skillful cooks , and the cooks on Gulf Oil were pretty good . I heard a few people moan about Joe Shell , and Harrisons , but everywhere I sailed we were well fed , Although because of the cooks skills being sufficient to cover the Chief Stewards back

According to a Sparks pal of mine it had to be Zim line.
He flew out to join his first one in Hamburg in the early 70's. First breakfast goes into the saloon and on the menu is steak and eggs, WOW, so he orders his medium rare, strange look from steward who came back with his plate of BACON and eggs. The steak was in name only not to offend anyone on a Jewish ship.
Wonder if the served pork on any of the Iran line ships that were predominately manned by Brits and Germans in the 70's and even to this day have a large European contingent on board.

best feeders in my time were the ore carriers in the early 60s........plenty of everything .......and what a selection........but still had the old timers and some of the ignorant young demanding ...we want wa wack ......as a 2nd steward .....i said ok when they got there wack it was a different tune ....but didnt we all grumble good or bad ......but reminded me again of old stores ...in which a jar of pickled onions had little live beasts in ......no one believed this but rob confirmed this can happen .....we had taken stores from another co ship and on pouring our connie onnie milk onto the wheeties saw little maggots swimming in a desperate attempt to escape ......the vessel was being sold to the chinese ....and of course the weevils were standard.....but it was not so .......out of the ordinary ...and tales from old hands were even more awful ....but we moaned and groaned and said we would see the union whn we got back to the uk .....but pay off day we were down onto the quay all smiling and happy ......no union thoughts ......regards cappy
