Hard hats and safety boots. In the North Sea in my day if you were sighted from the rig or platform on deck without you were reported. If working on a rig and disregarded such, were fired and in the next chopper ashore. Heard of one smart ass out here in Australia who was member of boat crew and refused to wear the specified gear and was sacked on the spot. The maritime union unable to do anything for him. You obey instructions or join the dole queue there was always plenty ready to jump in your shoes. Cheers JS Or should say safety boots JS
seppy kincaid a shields bosn .........shorts vest and flip flops from sailing in dec from the tyne to 9 month later in hot and cold same gear ....washed every day

john about 15 years ago i rang his wife he lived on horsley hill ......iguess he would have been in his 80s then his wife answered the phone and when i asked to speak to him she gently cried and said i have lost my lovely seppy ....it was sad ......i know old roberts would spend time talking to him ....which was a true accolade......i think there are not many now ....the likes of him a different breed......the epitome of a old time bosn......always had a big droopy tash........didnt go ashore much and never drunkregards cappy
John, Your post got me thinking how many we sailed with have passed, But one guy I will never forget as a young deck boy I sailed with a guy from Liverpool his name was Joe Dalzele he was 75yrs young and can only ever remember him mixing paint in the focsl,e head. His official capacity was lamp trimmer. We young lads would wined him up you daft old bugger, You are passed your sell by date I can remember him sneaking up behind one lad and tipping a can of oil base mix all over his golden locks, He was a character alright.
