A warm hello
A warm hello to all and many thanks to the administrators of this site. My late husband, Mr James Fergus Kelly 8-8-40 , engineer, was in the Merchant Navy but I am struggling to find details. I am sure member posts will be useful as others must be in a similar situation. I started a genealogy search and found his father was a Chief Officer 1937. His name was James Kelly. I sadly don't have any documentation for either of them so any words of wisdom on where to start searching would be gratefully received

Re: A warm hello
Hello Heather
Welcome to the site and I hope that you will get some good leads on what you are looking for!
I have looked at the NA Kew,and I cannot find any records for J F Kelly (Born 8-8-40)
but that does not mean to say that there is no documentation for him!
The only reason that there is none showing could be that he was still in the M Navy after 1972 as there were no records recorded after that!
There is also the CRS10 Records to look at they may be there ??But again not if he was at Sea after 72.
Where was he and his Dad Born please! What date was his Father Born (Year will do)
Cheers

Vernon,and Heather.
I've said this before Vernon-I too went to sea in( 1969) and remained until 1990,and there are no records kept as you say after 1972.In a way it has always irritated, disappointed and saddened me-it's as if I don't count in the MN.
I know differently of course having my Discharge Book ,my BSC (ID) and my own personal log books in which thankfully I recorded every voyage.
But of course when I 'cock my toes' those items will be dispersed and lost and nobody researching me in the future will ever know or care that I existed in the MN.
Or perhaps it all really was a dream?

Re: A warm hello
Gulliver, I did not get near the years you were at sea but I did keep a log of my voyages and photographed as much as I could. Unfortunately some were lost when water seeped into my removal container 30 years ago. I also wrote of my life up to the start of my second voyage in 1947 and my three grandsons have asked for me to write all. That makes me feel as though there is some continuity and that will flow through. I will try and continue with 'My Journey Through Life' and at least when I 'cock my toes' there is the chance that the memory will hang around in the family for a while and may be an inspiration when things in the garden are not all that lovely. And it's free!

Re: A warm hello
Hi Doc,
many thanks for your response. I think his father was born in 1906 or 1907. I am still looking for his exact details but I did find his marriage certificate which took place in Glasgow. I know the family had links to Ireland and when I looked on the census I found a possible match for county antrim. I don't have a lot at the moment. x

Can I correct you there Vernon. The reason there are no online records showing is that not all seamen's pouches survive and JF Kelly's may be one of those. His CRS 10 should still be at Kew if it has survived. There are no records from 1973 - 1999 but they are kept after this date. Also his CRS 10 will show all his ships up until 1972 but none will be recorded on the CRS 10 after this date if he continued to serve. Sorry to be pedantic but it is important.
Regards
Hugh
