Hello from Ralph Brammer
I have joined this site as I am researching the merchant navy career of my late father-in-law, George Abernethy Alexander Grant (who lived from 1904 to 1964 and whom sadly I never met). Through the information available now online, I have found that his first job as a cadet was on the Bhamo, starting in 1923. I have also found a list of his ships. Eventually he became a Master Mariner and was in the Merchant Navy until the start of WWII, when he was drafted into the RAF to teach navigation. After the war he did not return to sea, but taught navigation at Sir John Cass College in London and co-wrote 'The Ship's Compass', which some members may know of as a standard textbook of navigation for many years.
My main hobby is model-making, mostly railway stock, but also boats. I would very much like to make a model of the type of vessel on which George Grant served. The list I have is as follows:
132999 Mandalay; 145594 name not found; 150367 name not found; 124249 Bhamo; 147950 Ingola; 160318 Clune Park; 147658 Golden Sea; 135708 Nagara; 160405 El Argentino; 135459 Phidias; 149975 Parracombe; 161383 Welcombe; 133105 Clan MacKellar.
I have found some of the history of most of these ships, but would very much like photos and plans of any of them in order to make a model.
I am hoping that this may be of interest to someone - perhaps there may be a member who remembers George Grant or the book 'The Ship's Compass'?

Many thanks
Thank you very much everyone for your prompt replies and such a warm welcome. The information I have received already has helped me fill in quite a few gaps (including the missing ships' names) and I will be most interested to study all the photos in detail. Many thanks indeed. Ralph.
